One Million Dogs Still To Be Chipped As Microchipping Becomes Compulsory In UK Tomorrow

The latest stats from Defra have revealed that more than one million dogs in the UK are still to be microchipped, and that a significantly higher number of dog owners’ contact details are not up to date on their microchip record, with only one day to go until microchipping of dogs becomes compulsory in England, Scotland and Wales.

The figures reveal that more than one million dogs still need to be microchipped, with more than seven million dogs now microchipped and registered on a compliant database. In addition to dogs being required to be microchipped by law, the owner’s contact details must be recorded and up to date to ensure owners are complying with the new law and do not receive a hefty fine.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “We welcome the new microchipping regulations in England, Wales, and Scotland which come into force tomorrow. The regulations highlight the importance of dog owners ensuring that they not only register their pet’s details on an approved database but ensure their contact details are accurate and up to date – not only because this is now a legal requirement but also because it is in the interest of the welfare of their dogs to do so.

“The microchipping regulations will go a long way towards improving dog welfare by ensuring that dog owners are more aware of their responsibilities, and because microchipping and keeping contact details up to date helps ensure speedy reunification of a missing dog with its owner.”

In order to raise awareness of the new law, the Kennel Club have launched www.chipitcheckit.co.uk, a new website to help dog owners to understand their responsibilities regarding compulsory microchipping.

The website is a one-stop shop for everything people need to know about compulsory microchipping, from checking a microchip to advice, tips and downloads for breeders, vets, dog owners and more, to ensure all dog owners and breeders are complying with the law.

All dog owners in England, Wales and Scotland have until 6th April 2016 to have their dog microchipped and registered with a government compliant microchip database. After that date, all puppies must be microchipped and registered with a microchip database by the time they are 8 weeks old. Anyone who does not have their dog microchipped after 6th April 2016 will have 21 days to have the dog microchipped, and failure to do so may result in a fine.

The microchipping regulations do not affect the requirement for collars and tags as part of the Control of Dogs Order 1992.
