Table Talk – June 6, 2018

I am off to my first Woofstock cluster tomorrow! It has been a while since I have felt such anticipation about going to a dog show, and it feels great. I have my go-go boots and hippie wear packed and I’m ready to join in the fun! Check our website throughout the weekend for photos of your favorite hippies!

Social media has added an entire new dimension to our society and the sport of purebred dogs. As most of you know, I make an effort week after week to put a positive spin on nearly everything I write about. On those occasions that I post something on social media, I try to think it through and read it before I take it public in order to ensure there is a positive spin to what I post. Before social media, there was not as much opportunity to air feelings publicly (and quickly), or raise issues that one otherwise would not discuss in public. It seems that those who do not have the courage or inclination to confront a situation directly have no problem discussing it on a public forum. On the other hand, before social media, there was no opportunity to share the joy of wins, congratulate our friends and colleagues on their good fortune, and even offer words of encouragement and education to those in need.

So, I have adopted a new personal social media policy. This is just for me, and I think it will help me to deal with Facebook posts, etc. that I don’t find interesting or appropriate. If I start to read a post that is going down a negative road, I stop reading, hide it and move on. Another negative post from the same individual and off my feed they go. Life is too short! Perhaps if we all think twice before we post, we can make social media sites a happier, healthier resource! My recommendation is to read your post twice before taking it public. I also suggest that you make sure there is something positive in everything you post. Think about the non-dog show person who may be reading your comments. Social Media should be another vehicle for outreach to help grow our sport.

Bill McFadden and his son, Keagan, are enjoying the beautiful countryside in Ireland. Bruce Schwartz is headed to Australia. Best wishes for great times abroad my friends! Tim Catterson jetted off to Japan for a judging assignment. Michael Faulkner will be traveling to Amsterdam in August to judge at the World Dog Show. We can’t wait to hear about your experiences!

Best wishes to German Shorthaired Pointer/Vizsla fancier and professional handler Patty Crowley who is hospitalized in a coma. A GoFundMe account has been established to assist Patty and her daughter at this difficult time. Contact Sharon Dattilio for more information.

Happy Anniversary to our friends, Colton and Heather Johnson. I was glad to see you guys were able to spend your anniversary in the same state! Here is to many more years of health and happiness and great times with your family.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Kellie Miller, Judy Ellis, Janet Lange Moses, D. Scott Pfeil, Jan Kolnik, Terry Chacon, Daniel Chavez, Jordan Olivera and Mike Kurtzner.

If you are coming to Woofstock, please look me up. I’d love to show your “Hippy side” to our readers.

Wherever your travels take you, please be safe, and watch your dog’s paws on the hot pavement! If you need to make a request of any of the show officials, please remember they are doing their best. Please be kind to them.

Until next time…
