Table Talk

There is never a dull moment in the world of purebred dogs! The Houston Cluster started off with a “bang” when the fire alarm was set off from kitchen smoke. The entire building was evacuated. Congrats to the show committee and all the exhibitors for executing the evacuation in an orderly manner. Many of those who did not have dogs, or multiple dogs, assisted those who had multiple dogs in getting their charges out to safety. This is another indication of our close-knit community! Thankfully, as soon as everyone was out, the all clear was announced and the show resumed without further delay. The good news is no one was hurt.

A disaster such as this is one of my biggest fears. It takes us HOURS to unload and set up at a big cluster like Houston. Many handlers have a large string of dogs: How is one to safely extract an entire string of dogs at a moment’s notice? Is there a plan for instances such as this one? For starters, there should be a lead for every dog in the set-up and a plan for how they would be taken out, where to go, how to get to the truck, etc. in case of an emergency. In many instances, box trucks and big rigs are parked far away from the building: How will that be dealt with in an emergency? Its’ something to think about.

On a happier note, how fun to hear that Elaine Lessig had a litter of Cavalier puppies. It’s rare anymore to hear of our judges continuing their breeding program. Congrats Elaine for serving your breed and our sport so well!

Both Don and Liz Powell and Dr. Cindy Bossart and Connie Dubois recently returned from separate Alaskan Cruises. Can’t wait to hear the details.

We seem to have an plague of injuries among us. Adam Bernardin is recovering nicely from back surgery. Meanwhile Lisa Bettis is sidelined with a knee injury. Norm Fargo, who regularly shows in Canada but does a good deal of showing here in the states, broke his foot while showing dogs. I hope everyone recovers soon.

It is great to hear that Nancy Martin is staying busy, with a positive cause I might add, since retiring from handling. Nancy is the President of the Fido Food Bank out West. Last year alone the Fido Food Bank disbursed 208,000 meals to dogs and cats of senior individuals who would not otherwise be able to keep their pets due to cost. Way to go Nancy! She is extremely passionate about this program and does a terrific job.

I was sorry to hear that Janet Lange Moses’ mom passed away. She was 87. Sincere condolences to Janet and her family on their loss. On a happier note, construction has begun on Janet’s Disney World home. Anyone who knows Janet knows how much she LOVES Disney!

Kim Calvacca and the Kimro team had a very tough week. They lost two of their dogs: Ch. Kimro’s Toy Soldier aka “Sarge” and Ch. Kimro’s Rocket Man aka “The Rock”. It is so tough to watch our beloved dogs get old then lose them. Hang in there guys. We are so sorry for your loss.

The Westminster Kennel Club has hired Anna Gracie as Media Manager. Anna has a background in purebred dogs and will be responsible for growing WKC’s digital footprint with a focus on social media. She will work with Gail Miller Bisher on the ‘Road to Westminster’ and other related projects.

It was great to hear that friends who will not be able to attend Courtney Kniola and Tony Vacha’s destination were able to have a get together to celebrate their upcoming marriage. At last Tony and Courtney tie the knot!

Best wishest to those celebrating birthdays this week: Judy Welch, Larry Lentz, Kyle Robinson, Stuart McGraw, Terri Giannetti and Laura Coomes.

Congrats to those of you who made it through the Texas Death March! Please travel safe wherever your canine travels may take you, and keep an eye on those dogs in this heat! Don’t forget to do that one kind thing next time you are at a show…

Until next time…
