Table Talk

One of my favorite clusters of the year is the Beehive Cluster in Jordan, Utah. The Cluster Committee uses a good portion of the sponsorship dollars from Purina to enhance the exhibitor experience which is terrific! An exhibitor lunch is provided on Friday and enjoyed by all. While the venue may be considered a bit “dusty”, everything is done to spray the arena nightly to pack the dirt to minimize the dust. The weather in the area this time of year is fabulous and the area is lovely. There are great hotels and restaurants close by and everyone does the best they can to ensure the show runs expediently. All in all it is a great experience for everyone who attends and, in my opinion, it is a terrific show for those novice exhibitors to gain a bit of experience. Kudos to the show committee for another job well done!

Attending the Beehive Cluster for the second year in a row was the Independent Aging Program. This program provides resources to the elderly to enable them to keep their pets. Dog food donations keep this program going, in addition to small sponsorship grants. The more dog food donations the program receives, the less they need to dip into their grant reserves. I encourage all to donate to worthy programs such as this. I know Nancy Martin, retired handler and better half of AKC Rep Brian Martin, is very passionate about a similar program in her area. I encourage all my friends to pitch in and do whatever is possible to help keep these programs going! Purina donated all remaining samples and treats to the Utah program this past weekend.

While I was hoping that I would be able to write this week’s column with no sad news, this is not the week…again. Long-time Shar-Pei fancier and Working and Non-Sporting group judge Lois Sanford passed away May 5th while surrounded by family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lois’ friends and family. There will be a celebration of Lois’ life on Thursday, May 11th from 3-5 PM at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington Street, New London, CT 06320. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the St. Hubert Kennel Club c/o Marc Campbell, Treasurer, P.O. Box 538, East Lyne, CT 06333, or to the Chinese Shar-Pei Charitable Trust, P.O. Box 428, Saddle River, NJ 07458.

Tony Carter is struggling through the final stages of his cancer treatment. We all keep Tony in our thoughts as he fights through his illness. We hope to see him back at the shows as we all miss his smiling face.

I was glad to hear that Dave Slattum and all his dogs were okay after his vehicle was rear-ended while he was returning from shows this past weekend. Once again, the dog show community came together and Karla Edwards and John and Patricia Gillis helped Dave get all the dogs home safe!

Congratulations to Morgan Miller, RHP Apprentice to Andrew Green, on receiving the George Ward Scholarship for the 2nd time!! What an accomplishment!

Jay Serion is off In Shanghai China to show at the China Kennel Union.

We received sad news that Ernesto Lara’s 90-year-old mother took a bad fall and suffered injuries that require surgery. Ernest flew to Mexico to be with her during this trying time. We extend our prayers to her during the surgery and hope she has a quick recovery.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Patrina Odette, Susan Roark, Heather Johnson, Monica Booth and Alessandra Folz Stymiest.

Have a drama free week everyone, and be kind to each other!

Until next time…..
