Table Talk – February 27, 2019

February 27, 2019

I was shocked to read that the Armory Art show scheduled to be held at Pier 92 in New York beginning March 7th has been relocated to alternative Piers as a result of a city inspection revealing the Pier is structurally unsafe. Pier 92 was the site for the 143rd Westminster Kennel Club breed judging just a couple of weeks ago. The parking facility on the roof of Pier 92 was closed during Westminster due to the structure’s instability. It seems now that city officials have declared the entire structure to be unsafe, not just the parking structure. It makes one wonder if this will affect next year’s Westminster breed judging?

I’d like to encourage all my fellow fanciers to read Sandy Weaver’s recent article “The Customer Service Gap in Dog Sports” which is posted on the caninechronicle.com website and featured in the print magazine on page 134. The article did a great job of making me aware of ways in which I might have been guilty of being too busy to reach out or be responsive to the public. If you have the time, give the article a read. It gives you a reason to pause for reflection and will hopefully help make us a more welcoming community in the future.

In the spirit of keeping things interesting, I am going to add “most memorable moments” to Table Talk. Please give some thought to your most memorable moment in the sport and let me hear from you! I hope to bring some memorable moments to you live as well. Speaking of which, Table Talk Live! will be in Louisville and I would love to hear from you if you are willing/available to do a breed priority segment on your breed. Please shoot me an email at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com if you are interested in participating.

Free reserved grooming for the Louisville cluster will close this Friday, March 1st so please get your grooming reservations in to louisvillegrooming@woh.rr.com as soon as possible. If you have emailed your grooming reservation and have not received a response, please email again as all grooming reservation emails receive a response.

As a community, I feel strongly that we all need to make efforts to be supportive of our fellow competitors and fanciers. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I think it is important for our sport that we keep negative opinions to ourselves. If one feels the need to discuss those opinions, it is my hope that we all keep those discussions confidential, behind closed doors, and certainly not in social or printed media. If you have ever been on the receiving end of negative comments about your dog, this thought will hit home. The saying “do unto others” is applicable here!

Lori Wilson-Paust and hubby Bobby are off on a Mexican cruise for some R&R. Doug Johnson and Jamie Hubbard are in Croatia taking in the sights and judging. Laura King, Robin Novak and Sarah and Matt Perchick are enjoying fun in the sun in Cabo.

Val Atkinson is back running left-handed circles after a 6-week break to recover from knee surgery. Welcome back, my friend!

I was sorry to hear that famed Texas handler Roy Murray passed away after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Roy was loved by all that knew him, and he will be missed. A celebration of Roy’s life will be held Thursday, March 14th at 2:00 PM at Southlake Clubhouse, 301 Watermere Drive, Southlake, TX 76092.

Shiba fancier and AKC Breeder of Merit Frederick Duane passed away suddenly this past week shocking all that knew and loved him. Poodle fancier Charles Arnold also passed away recently. Our thoughts are with all friends and family at this difficult time.

Matt and Melissa Mato’s trailer that was stolen with their box truck in Colorado last week has been found! Unfortunately, their box truck is still missing.

Gloria Geringer is home recovering from surgery. Friends who would like to send a card to her can send it to: 18485 Freeland Road, Welsh, LA 70591. We wish you a speedy recovery, my friend, and we look forward to seeing you center ring again soon.

It is hard to believe that Rob and Diana Skibinski are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary! Happy anniversary and we wish you many more happy, healthy years together.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Luke Baggenstos, Leonardo Garcini, Nate Francesco, Maria Arechaderra, Leslie Potts and Sarah Drake.

Hang in there, guys! Spring will be here soon. Take care, and wherever your travels may take you, please be careful. Until next time…
