Table Talk – January 16, 2019

To most of my West Coast friends (and a large number of exhibitors from other parts of the country), the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, California is a familiar venue for dog shows. There are at least seven show weekends each year at this venue, including Woofstock, Sir Francis Drake and Santa Cruz. The Fairgrounds is currently going through a renegotiation of their fair agreement with the Solano County Board of Supervisors. Through this process, an item was added recommending that the fairgrounds become a “fair only” venue, thereby eliminating any “outside” events including dog shows. Marti Johnson was asked by Fairgrounds Management to make a presentation to the Board of Supervisors, which she did, and feels that her presentation was well-received. Hopefully, an education to the Board of Supervisors regarding the positive economic impact dog shows have on the Vallejo community made a significant impact. We will keep everyone posted on how the fancy can help Marti in her efforts to maintain this venue; this includes attending the February meeting. We should all extend many thanks to Marti for her efforts on behalf of the fancy. Stay tuned for more information.

Unfortunately, there were some sick dogs brought to the Allentown, PA shows in December. As a result, a few dogs were severely affected, and there has been at least one death that was allegedly caused by exposure to a virus at the show. If we all pitch in and keep symptomatic dogs home, including all dogs exposed, we can hopefully avoid another major outbreak of illness amongst our special friends.

Anyone interested in participating in Ryan Wolfe’s 2019 Top Dog Pool needs to reach out to him; it closes this coming Saturday, January 19! Pick your 2019 group winners and win some cash! Facebook Message Ryan Wolfe or Paul Catterson for more information.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America is the proud winner of the #teamdog contest! The Club won a $4,999.99 package to the Royal Canin Ring in Wilmington, Ohio for their National Specialty. Well over 20,000 photos were uploaded to the site during the contest. The winner was announced during the broadcast of the AKC National Championship on New Year’s Day. Congratulations to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Community for your efforts on behalf of your breed!

The dog world lost several beloved fanciers this past week: Hughey Woodle, Jr., Pomeranian fancier and husband of AKC judge Sue Woodle passed away. Alicia Chmielewski of Merwin Hill Boxers passed away. Professional handler and AKC licensed superintendent Jim Campbell also passed away. Poodle fancier and long-time mentor Carol Millar passed away. Norlee Reece, handler and St. Bernard and Corgi fancier, passed away after suffering a stroke. Our thoughts are with all of their family and friends after such a great loss. May you all find peace and comfort at this most difficult time in your life.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Tina Dougan, Rhanda Glenn, Cheslie Pickett-Smithey, Courtney Kniola, Nancy Liebes, Jeff Sossamon, Daryl Martin, Adam King and Tammy Seidlitz.

We are still looking for individuals to appear on camera for our breed priority segments of Table Talk Live! in New York City during Westminster week. Please email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com if you are interested in participating in a breed priority segment.

Be safe in your travels my friends, and keep an eye out for that newbie that may need a helping hand! Best of luck out there! Until next time…
