Table Talk – November 14, 2018

One of the most concerning issues of the mid-term elections for me was Florida Amendment 13 that banned greyhound racing. Sadly for the sport of purebred dogs in general, and these greyhounds specifically, the Amendment passed. In my opinion, the passing of this Amendment was the result of the Animal Rights Activist groups appealing to a naïve public. As a long-time greyhound enthusiast, my views on greyhound racing have changed over the years. I did do my research about greyhound racing as I wanted to maintain an educated point of view. While I am not interested in going to either a dog track or a horse track personally, I do have a better understanding of the way these canine athletes are cared for during their racing careers and in retirement.

As a result of the passage of Amendment 13 there are 8,000+ greyhounds that will be out of a job, and out of a place to live, by 2020. There are also thousands of people who make their living from greyhound racing who will have to find a new line of work. The reputable greyhound rescue groups and breeders who are experienced at placing these dogs will do everything in their power to do right by these dogs, but it takes time, money and countless volunteer hours to find good homes for them.

Many fanciers have joined forces in an attempt to repeal this amendment. I encourage one and all to do what you can to help. In my opinion, this amendment is another opportunity for the Animal Rights Activists to come after the sport we all know and love. Please educate yourself prior to donating to a campaign concerning this issue to ensure that you are helping the right cause: The cause that protects our right to raise and compete with dogs. We also need to protect the hard-working volunteers and groups that have the backs of these dogs by ensuring that they receive necessary veterinary care and are placed in the best possible loving homes. Make certain you are NOT donating to a cause that believes the best answer is to euthanize these lovely creatures and prevent them from doing what they were bred to do and, more importantly, continue to find ways to attack the sport of purebred dogs.

The Camp Fire in Southern California has decimated the city of Paradise and continues on its wicked path of destruction. Saluki fanciers Pat and Ed Gilbert were missing for several days and friends were running social media campaigns in an attempt to find them. Thankfully, Pat and Ed and their dogs, Aran and Kamal, are OK!!!! They escaped with the clothes on their backs and their two dogs and were safely checked into a hotel. Our thoughts are with the Gilberts along with all the others who are experiencing loss due to the fires. Elaine Riesman had to evacuate as well and is safe, thank goodness. Those who are trying to find their animals should check the Chico airport where they are housing hundreds of lost and displaced pets.

Our thoughts are with Wally and Carol Rice as Wally continues his fight against lung cancer. Wally is undergoing proton radiation treatment after surgery was unsuccessful. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Wally and Carol during this most difficult time.

Robin Greenslade is off to Havana with her sister, Nancy, for what looks to be a fantastic journey! Brian and Lori Livingston are traveling to Italy to celebrating Lori’s birthday. Jason Hoke and his partner, Dino, are also enjoying some R&R in Italy! Meanwhile, Katie and Adam Bernardin were enjoying a bite of the “Big Apple” stateside taking in the fantastic sites of New York City. I hope you all have a great trip my friends! We all would love to see photos of your journeys!

Happy 8th wedding anniversary to Courtney and William Bastian! May you lovebirds have many more happy, healthy, hunting years ahead of you.

Art Johnson checked in with terrific news telling us that his wife, Gloria, has received the all clear from oncologists in her fight against pancreatic cancer. We look forward to having Gloria back in the Chihuahua ring soon. Best wishes my friends and congratulations on the great news.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Ernie Conti, Lorraine Boutwell, Barbara Wagner, Alyssa Beutler, Bill Hempel, Terry James, John McCartney, Pam Hoerster, Rob Skibinski, Amy Rutherford, Jessica David-Tauber, Sydney Good, Glenn Lycan, Eric Liebes and Phil Booth.

Be safe in your travels my friends and please take a minute to help a new exhibitor and to thank our hard-working show committee volunteers! Until next time…
