Table Talk · May 17, 2023

Liz Muthard, who is home recuperating from a mini-stroke, had the following message to those in the fancy:

“Charlie and I want to extend our most sincere appreciation to each and every one of you who posted, texted or called with concern for my wellbeing. I am home and doing very well. For the record, elevated blood pressure caused a TIA, or mini stroke. I realized what was happening, took aspirin immediately and went to the ER even though the symptoms had resolved. I am very fortunate that there was no neurological damage.

We are so thankful for everyone’s concern and prayers…our extended dog family is THE BEST!!! We love you all!!

Be well and carry aspirin…it could save your life or that of someone close to you!”

Liz, everyone is so glad you came through this with no permanent damage; and we all look forward to having you back in the ring judging sooner rather than later. We need you to keep Charlie in line!!!

Judge Sulie Greendale-Paveza is back after several months off while recuperating from an injury.  It is great to have you back, my friend!!

Just because you can… Does it mean that you should? This past weekend, there was a specialty held at the Limestone Cluster in Bloomington, Indiana. It was for a breed that is back to low-entry status. It was a wonderful opportunity for 6 majors in four days. Wow! A 6-9 month-old puppy, who won the breed over specials on his 6-month birthday on the first day won a major Thursday, two on Friday and one on Saturday morning, finishing his championship with 18 points! This puppy stayed in the 6-9 month-old puppy class for the afternoon specialty on Saturday, despite finishing (and taking a finishing photograph) in the morning. According to the Rules According to Dog Shows, the dog is not “officially” finished until the championship is recorded by AKC, however, the requirements to achieve the championship were achieved with three points to spare. There is no rule stating this puppy cannot be kept in the classes; however, was it the most sportsmanlike approach? I am interested in your views on this as showing finished “unrecorded” champions in the classes has been discussed frequently. Please email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com with your thoughts. There are many fanciers interested in the various points of view that might be offered!

At a show that was held recently, a dog was frightened on the examination table as a result of the judge not giving the exhibitor sufficient time to stack it prior to the exam. While it may seem like a long period of time to the judge while waiting for an exhibitor to prepare their dog for examination, it is very important to not only allow sufficient time for the dog to be prepped for exam, but to not be heavy-handed during the examination process. Judges should note that a 2-minute negative experience can ruin a dog’s show career and scare off an exhibitor for good!  Judges, please be patient with exhibitors, and give a reasonable amount of time for them to prepare their dogs before you start the examination!

Last weekend a fellow exhibitor showed an amazing act of kindness. After an owner/handler received the highest honor of Best In Show at an all-breed dog show, she returned to the show the following morning to find a lovely drawing and flowers congratulating her on her win! It warms my heart to hear that we have kind, loving, thoughtful competitors among us!

The American Kennel Club has announced a revision to the Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Judges. The time-period that an agent must wait before exhibiting to a judge they worked for has been increased from 4 months to 6 months. Working for an active judge can be complicated. Be sure to know the rules and follow them so you don’t put anyone in an awkward position!

AKC Club Development has announced a new Judges Panel Management System (JPM) within the online Event Management System. This system enables clubs to manage judging panels for multiple events simultaneously and facilitates efficient assignment of a judge to multiple classes/breeds/sweepstakes. Club volunteers who have questions about this new system should email events at eventplans@akc.org for assistance.

Happy Anniversary to Gina and Cliff Weiser, Tuni and Ernie Conti, and Rhonda Holloway and John Kolodziej. May you guys enjoy many more years of happiness, love and puppy kisses!
