Tips From Inside The Ring with Mr. Doug Johnson

Ever wonder what the judge is thinking? Want to know what they are looking for, or what you could have done better? Enjoy reading what Mr. Doug Johnson, a breeder, exhibitor and judge has to share with exhibitors!

  • Be open to the process,  you have to be willing to learn from this process of judging.  The judge has something to offer.
  • With the longer circuits your dogs need a full bath before showing….at least by the third day.  On the fifth day your dog is now dirty.
  • While this seems obvious to me, it is lacking in many exhibits: Teeth cleaning, nails trimmed, fully brushed/ no matts.  This is basic but often overlooked.
  • Be early to your ring, be prepared, watch judging. WATCH LOOK AND LISTEN    You need to be ready and come to the ring prepared your dog to show.  Get in the mindset to show and while I am saying this, never give up.  Many exhibitors give up and their dogs let down.  It isn’t over till its over. Stay mentally engaged till the end!!
  • After you show stay for the conclusion of your breed judging, learn from the experience. Watch other breeds being judged to learn what this judge is looking for.
  • Don’t assume.  Judges are well aware of their procedures and how they want to run their ring.
  • Stop telling judges your dogs are covid babies— we don’t care or think that is an excuse for anything.
  • Polish your shoes and/or wipe them off!
  • Your attire shows your respect of the sport. Look in a mirror, have someone videotape you running in your choices.
