As regular readers may have noticed, when writing these historical pieces on our pedigree breeds, I like to intersperse them with some small anecdotes–various stories of my ‘up close and personal’ interactions with the beautiful dogs described.
However, unfortunately, I have no such tales to tell about the subject of this month’s analysis–the mighty Bloodhound–although it is a breed that has always fascinated me and certainly attracts my attention at shows.
This admiration is probably no great surprise, given the meaning of my very Irish surname literally translates as ‘lover of hounds!’
And this is quite some hound; in fact, it is known, by those most closely acquainted with it, as the ‘King of Hounds’–a designation it truly deserves!
A halo of romance, tinged with a degree of horror, certainly surrounds the glorious history of the Bloodhound. Down through the centuries, this noble dog has been the victim of a vicarious ill reputation, which, quite unfairly associated him with the chase, mutilation, and bloody slaughter of fugitives and runaway slaves.
