The Big E – More Than Enough

On a spectacular fall day with the bright red, orange, and yel- low leaves moving gently in the wind, I walked briskly, reveling in the crisp, cool air and bright sunshine. What a relief it was to actually enjoy a fall day after so many unusually hot and humid ones. As I went along my usual route through the quaint little village of Annandale, New Jersey, a sign caught my attention. At the front steps of the Annandale Reformed Church with its white clapboard siding and tall, pastel colored stained glass windows, a large glass covered sign announced that at next Sun- day’s service the sermon topic was “More Than Enough”.

I kept my pace as I continued on my way. “More Than Enough, More Than Enough” I kept repeating, trying to decide how the rev- erend intended to expound upon those prophetic words. Did he mean with all the troubles we face in this world with terrorism, the economy, and pollution, it is more than enough to expect the solu- tions? Was he thinking that personal stresses like jobs, bills, or fam- ily issues, which wear us down, become more than enough to cope with every day? One after another, thoughts like these kept pelting me as I walked along.

About a mile later, as I continued to traverse the neighborhood streets with their well-kept Victorian homes, a line from the poem God’s World written by Edna St. Vincent Millay suddenly came to me: “Thy woods, this autumn day…, that… all but cry with color!…Lord, I do fear, thou’st made the world too beautiful this year!” Filled with the pleasures of this first taste of autumn, I pas- sionately repeated those words from the poem over and over again.

Suddenly, I realized that’s it! That’s it! I understand. “More than enough” is an expression of gratitude which wells up and demands a voice. We don’t need it all. Sometimes enough is, well, enough. Enough can be the source of great joy if only we acknowledge it. As the miles of pavement passed beneath my feet, so did numerous incidents which needed to be added to the “More than Enough” list I was developing
