“EXPERIENCE” – the Noun and the Verb

Stay with me on this. The word “experience” exists in two domains. The first is as a noun, an experience. The second is the verb, to experience. Both share our lives in dogdom. Both are essential elements of those lives. It is what we choose to do with this noun and this verb which makes all the difference. Try thinking this one through. How we experience the experience defines us.

I was planning on meeting a good friend of mine at a large specialty not very far from where I live in New Jersey. She was traveling to that prestigious specialty in her breed with another woman with whom she has been co-breeding for many years. They had a lengthy trip that would require them to be away from their respective homes for several days. On the way, they received a phone call Somehow the reliable dog sitter they had used for years had inadvertently left a gate open. Seven dogs escaped. Three were captured and returned unharmed. Four dogs were not so blessed. Their bodies were quickly recovered.

Although the specialty show did not start until the next day, I decided to drive up that night to be there when they arrived. By that time their families had the remaining dogs settled at home. They had four dogs with them who needed to have their crates moved into their room, exercised, and given food and water. There was a van loaded with dog show equipment, clothes, and trophies to unload. There were so many things to do. In the parking lot I found two shell-shocked women consumed by grief and gratitude, too.
