Remembering Alan Hargrave

We are saddened to share the passing of Alan Hargrave.

Alan was a beloved professor at Ball State University, well respected by both faculty and students. He was deeply involved in student housing and was always there for his students, offering support and guidance.

The dog show community was one of Alan’s greatest joys. He cherished both the people and the dogs. After retiring, he began a new chapter as a judge, and was thrilled to start judging Terriers. He owned several Best in Show winners, including Tribute, Padre—and his most recent, Dynamite, who holds the all-time Best in Show record for Russell Terriers.

Outside the dog show world, Alan was a devoted member of his church and was very active in the community. He also loved quilting, creating quilts for many friends and donating several to Take the Lead auctions and for Best in Show trophies. In his free time, he could often be found in the kitchen—baking was his specialty. He was known for his delicious pies, cakes, and cookies, which he shared generously.

Earlier this year, Alan learned he needed a kidney transplant. In early April, he was fortunate to receive one. He enjoyed several good weeks afterward, taking walks with his neighbor Cathy, returning to church, visiting Costco, and shopping for spring flowers at the local nursery—one of his favorite pastimes. Sadly, Alan’s health challenges extended beyond his kidney, and his recovery was ultimately cut short.

Alan was a kind and witty man with countless friends. He will be deeply missed.

The Canine Chronicle extends our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
