Puppy Laundering – The Unsavory Big Business of Rescue for Profit

By Amy Fernandez

As if we don’t have enough problems…now we can also dwell on the unsavory practice of puppy laundering. Just like traditional money laundering, it’s everywhere if you look for it. And being in the dog biz…we are attuned to that inexplicable recent phenomenon of these new (politically correct) “rescue centers” that bear an uncanny resemblance to the pet shop retailers that decamped in recent years. And business is brisk.

Social and political pressure closed many of these commercial outlets for poorly bred, mass produced purebreds. (Puppy mill is a misleading, politically volatile term this writer will never put before you.) Still, charitable organizations have always been magnets for corruption. It’s not news that the big name groups lobbying for humane treatment of animals frequently come under investigation for their financial misbehavior. Rule of thumb–any group with the resources for TV ad campaigns does NOT need your $10 a month or whatever the going rate happens to be.

Anyway, anti-purebred crusaders have painted themselves into a brand new corner. While legit breeders continue to take the heat–for doing things properly–alternate sources for purebred stock have also been squeezed out of the retail market. Several states have enacted laws banning the sale of commercially bred stock. Only problem is that same old issue of supply and demand. Prohibition didn’t end drinking and this barrage of ideological shaming hasn’t curbed public demand for PUREBRED PUPPIES.

That’s the lead-up to where we are at the moment. Dubbed puppy laundering, it’s a backdoor channel to market mass produced pups through sham non-profit groups. It has also become common enough to earn a name, and merit state law enforcement scrutiny. Tip of the iceberg…because, just like any other “laundering” it boils down to taking valuable assets from questionable sources, repackaging them for legally acceptable usage, and evading a whole lotta tax laws and other tiresome stuff in the process. It never goes outta style.
