Looking Around with Lee – Live Streaming or Screaming?

Who still has fond memories of getting a breed club meeting notice with a program that included films of a recent specialty? It was a big deal if someone ventured out to a specialty, and they always had a Kodak Super 8 Camera with them to record the event. They were fair and unbiased (for the most part) capturing all the dogs in the show. Some of my friends did exert some ingenuity in filmmaking, like filming their dogs all the way to first place, only to cut it right there, when, in reality, their handler was actually walking up to congratulate the winner that beat them… But who would remember that three months later when the results came out?

Ahh… it was a much simpler time then. Show results came every three months with a new AKC Gazette or a slick breed publication with wins, brags, and puppies for sale. Once in a while, if you had a wealthy friend, you might get one of those “Long Distance Calls” and those cost a pretty penny back in the day. A call like that was special! Having a club program with a film presentation was “an event.” Nowadays, we can barely muster up a few warm bodies to get to a meeting. The energy required to put on a program is hard to justify if only a few people attend a club meeting.reach into their bra strap (or some other area under their blouse) and pull out bait

Also, please understand that proper “work” clothes for the position are important. No one wants (or needs) to see your panty lines, cleavage, or other unmentionables. (And these things apply to you men, too!). If I have to see one more handler (and this, sadly, includes Juniors) reach into their bra strap (or some other area under their blouse) and pull out bait, I am going to throw up! Whoever started that trend, please identify yourself! You have some explaining to do.

Besides, nowadays we have videos streaming everywhere, every day. It’s in front of us, like it or not. Don’t get me wrong, I rather enjoy seeing anything and everything about my favorite breeds and the major dog shows. I am one who made the effort to embrace the new computer technology (as best an octogenarian could do). I watch something posted almost every day. Therein lies the problem! Just like in real life, once you “see” something, it’s hard to unsee it. I think some of you out there–whether being filmed or doing the filming–need to develop a little “video etiquette” because I’m seeing things that at times embarrass me, frighten me or, sometimes, even excite me! Hey, I might be in my 80s, but I ain’t dead yet!

I understand that live streaming shows it all in real time; a dog having a good or bad day can’t change what the camera captures. However, does no one realize that anyone standing within 10 feet (or more) of a video device possibly has every spoken word included in the broadcast? I have seen, and heard, some pretty shocking things. Sometimes, it’s a wardrobe malfunction, sometimes a terse scuffle among exhibitors where some choice words might spew forth! Like the term evoke: Reality Live! One needs to always be on guard nowadays…
