How To Be a Great In-Ring Apprentice Judge

By Sandy Weaver – AKC Judge

It is after extensive interviews of exhibitors and judges that this article is written. OK, so it is really after a long weekend in Perry, Georgia where I did in-ring apprenticeships with two judges, had one judge say (s)he no longer allows in-rings, and listened as several other judges answered my questions about their experiences with apprentice judges in their rings. Exhibitors volunteered their opinions and experiences, as people often do, and the stories from both judges and exhibitors astonished me – and not in a good way!

Some of the tales of woe from judges included apprentices who:

1. Chatted up people at ringside as well as in the ring instead of paying attention to the dogs and what the judge was choosing.
2. Tried to chat them up while they were examining a dog or gaiting the class.
3. Got in the way of the individual exams and/or the gaiting pattern.
4. Took not a single note and didn’t ask any questions about the breed(s) observed.
5. Still expected to get paperwork signed so they could get the education points.

Some of the tales of woe from exhibitors included apprentices who:

1. Got in the way.
2. Distracted the judge.
3. Distracted the dogs.
4. Distracted the handlers.
5. Distracted the steward.

Years ago, AKC allowed in-ring apprentice judging. Then they didn’t, and the above grievances speak to why that change was made. Now in-ring is once again available as a learning experience, and it can be a very valuable step in the path to judging a breed. I love to do in-rings because I’m seeing the dogs almost from the judge’s point of view. I don’t touch them and don’t get a great look inside their mouths, though it’s still a better one than sitting at ringside.
