So therapy dogs at airports make us feel calmer–and safer. But there is another level of safety being insured that most travellers aren’t even aware of.

We’re all aware of the agency: the Transportation Safety Authority (TSA). Founded after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the agency’s charge is implied in its name, and dogs have always been an important part of its mission.

I felt incredibly privileged to be able to speak with three members of the TSA’s Canine Training Center based in San Antonio. Zebulon Polasek, the director of the San Antonio training center; Corvis Littleton, the deputy director of the TSA canine training center; and Carey Ford, supervisor, who was the principal spokesman for this interview.

Some of our conversation makes me feel like I’m in a Tom Clancy novel, and some of it reminds me of the more somber history behind the program.

The men all had backgrounds handling dogs in the military, and then moved on to training work with the TSA as second careers.
