The Black Russian Terrier was developed by the military Red Star kennel in Russia in the twentieth century, starting before and continuing after World War II. The goal was a breed that would be used by the military and national security. It had to be highly trainable, reliable, stable, courageous, useful for different purposes, and able to endure the harsh Russian weather.
Developed to guard and protect, the breed began with quality Giant Schnauzer and Rottweiler stock, and included Airedales, Newfoundlands, and thirteen other breeds. Private breeders became involved with the breed in the mid-1950s, and it was recognized in 1981 by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture. FCI recognized the breed in 1984. In 2001, the BRT was included in AKC in the Miscellaneous class and with regular status in the Working Group in 2004.
We emailed thirty-one Black Russian Terrier experts, inviting them to participate in a survey on their breed’s priorities in conformation. Nineteen responded and were sent the survey material. Eleven completed surveys were returned. Those who contributed have been in the breed for an average of more than twenty-five years.
