Remembering Blackie Nygood

We received the sad news that Frances “Blackie” Horn Nygood passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017

Blackie was born at Beebe Hospital in Lewes, May 11, 1928. She was the daughter of William A. and Nettie Tappan Horn. Blackie spent her childhood and her summers on the Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach and on Piney Island (near Joy Beach) in Rehoboth Bay, which her family owned and is now under water.
Blackie was educated at Dwight Morrow High School, Englewood, N.J., Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Va., and Hunter College in New York City.
Her working career took her to Bard College, Rhinebeck, N.Y., and the Norwalk and Westport Conn. boards of education. Blackie delighted in working with her third husband, Howard Nygood, a professional dog show handler who shared her passionate interest in breeding dogs. Her motto was “Marry your third husband first!”
Blackie was a breeder of American Kennel Club Champion Basset Hounds and Dachshunds, and belonged to numerous kennel clubs and dog organizations. In her retirement Blackie cared for her dogs and, along with her sister, Matilda “Til” Purnell, spent many hours needling the Sussex County Council about overdevelopment in the eastern part of the county. Blackie was outspoken on every subject, political and otherwise. She disliked the term liberal and preferred being called a “radical.”
Blackie was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Howard Nygood; her son, James Andrew Grinder Jr.; her favorite brother-in-law, Lewis “Skipper” Purnell; and many cherished dogs. She is survived by her sister Matilda “Til” Purnell of Free Union, VA.; her niece, Alice Purnell Cannon and her husband Jon of Earlysville, Va., and their children.
Anyone wishing to make a contribution in remembrance of Blackie may send it to her favorite charity, Take the Lead, P.O. Box 6353, Waterton, NY 13601 (takethelead.org) or the animal rescue organization of their choice.
Arrangements in the care of Short Funeral Services, Georgetown.
