Moreauville, LA Update: Breed Specific Legislation Emergency Town Hall Meeting Scheduled for Monday, Dec. 1

The Village of Moreauville will hold a public meeting Monday, December 1, 2014, to further discuss its recently-adopted draconian vicious dog ordinance. It is vital that all concerned dog owners contact Moreauville officials and express strong opposition to this drastic, unjust, and unnecessary ordinance.

RECAP: Last month, the Moreauville Board of Aldermen passed a breed-specific vicious dog law that bans the ownership of “pit bulls” and Rottweilers. No exceptions are provided to the ordinance, including for service, therapy, or emotional support dogs. Little public notice was provided when the ordinance was considered. Town officials were originally planning to enforce the ordinance, beginning on December 1, by confiscating each dog of the targeted breeds and euthanizing them within 30 days, regardless of whether or not a dog had previously exhibited any dangerous behavior. Moreauville officials also recently approved to pay for village employees to be certified in using tranquilizer rifles as a means of subduing targeted dogs.

However, in response to incredible negative reaction to the new law, a special council meeting has been scheduled for Monday, December 1, 2014, at 5PM, at the Town Hall in Moreauville, 9898 Bayou Des Glaises St., Moreauville, LA 71355.

AKC’S POSITION: The AKC supports reasonable, enforceable, non-discriminatory laws to govern the ownership of dogs. We support laws that: establish a fair process by which specific dogs are identified as “dangerous” based on stated, measurable actions; impose appropriate penalties on irresponsible owners; and establish a well-defined method for dealing with dogs proven to be dangerous. The American Kennel Club strongly opposes any legislation that determines a dog to be “dangerous” based on specific breeds or phenotypic classes of dogs.

The American Kennel Club is joined by the American Veterinary Medical Association, theNational Animal Care and Control Association, the American Bar Association, the National Animal Interest Alliance, and a multitude of other animal-focused organizations in opposing breed-specific policies.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

It is vitally important that all concerned dog owners call and email the Moreauville officials (listed below) and respectfully urge them to repeal the village’s new drastic vicious dog ordinance.  Urge them to enforce leash laws and to issue fines for violation instead of euthanizing innocent dogs. Click here for a sample letter to use when contacting elected officials to express opposition to breed-specific legislation.

Mayor Timmy Lemoine, along with Alderman Oscar P. Goody, Jr., Alderman Felix Benjamin, and Alderman Penn Lemoine, and Police Chief Scott Lemoine, may be reached at:
