AKC Canine Health Foundation Honors Dr. Anita Oberbauer with the 2019 Asa Mays, DVM Excellence in Canine Health Research Award

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs and their owners, announces that Dr. Anita Oberbauer is the recipient of the 2019 Asa Mays, DVM Excellence in Canine Health Research Award.

Named for Dr. Asa Mays, a member of CHF’s first Board of Directors in 1995, the award is a biennial honor presented to a research investigator who demonstrates meritorious achievements in furthering the mission of identifying, characterizing, and treating canine disease and ailments. Mary Smith, BVM&S, PhD, DACVIM (Neurology), CHF Board Member and Chairman of the CHF Scientific Review Committee, will present the award at the 2019 AKC Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health Conference on Saturday, August 10 in St. Louis, Missouri. The conference is sponsored by Nestlé Purina PetCare Company and features distinguished researchers presenting the latest medical and scientific advancements in canine health.

Anita Oberbauer, PhD is Professor of Animal Science and Associate Dean in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Previously she chaired the Department of Animal Science and was at the forefront of incorporating companion animals into the animal science curriculum. Dr. Oberbauer received her PhD from Cornell University followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Loma Linda University and UCLA. She has received distinguished teaching awards from the UC Davis Senate and the American Society of Animal Science Western Section, as well as outstanding mentor awards. She was recently awarded the prestigious UC Davis Prize for Teaching and Scholarly Achievements. Her research program emphasizes cellular components regulating skeletal growth and body composition, and the genetic basis for health disorders in dogs and cattle. She has trained more than thirty PhD, MS, and Visiting Scholars. Her research was recognized with the American Society of Animal Science Corbin Award in Companion Animal Biology. She is a director on the board of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, provides numerous invited talks on canine genetics, and serves on federal grant review panels and journal editorial boards.

“Dr. Oberbauer is a dedicated scientist and bridges the gap between canine health researchers, students, and breeders with her ability to make genetic information practical and relevant,” states Dr. Smith. “Her contributions to canine health and the dog community are very worthy of this accolade.”

In collaboration with researchers like Dr. Oberbauer, corporate partners, and donors, CHF is working to prevent, treat and cure canine disease.
